Writer's Block

“Hey uh, I saw your flyer in some coffee shop and I wanted to know how much did you charge?”
Brian said as he nervously spoke on the phone. He wasn’t the kind of guy to ask for help, he was too proud for that but he also wasn’t the kind of guy to pour out his emotions. At least he was smart enough when to enlist stronger forces.
“What do you want? I write all kinds of things; novels, blog posts, essays, research papers, but they come with an extra fee since I have to look things up.” Ghostwriting, you’d be surprised who actually writes their own work. It’s a lucrative business especially with the college students since they rather drink their livers away than actually do the work. But that didn’t matter to Loraine, ghostwriting was a sweet hustle that few did or talked about, and since no one did, it was easy not to claim it on her taxes.
“Uhh…” Brian stalled as he came to the realization of what he was actually doing. He could easily hang up now and forget he ever stooped down this low but he could get a lot of ass if it actually worked out. “I need a few love letters.” He finally spit out.
“Love letters? You can’t write a love letter?” Neither could she, Loraine thought. The life of a writer was lonely, especially her life, all day she locked herself in her home office typing away for other people that she had gotten into the routine of rarely leaving the house. She didn’t even go grocery shopping, she ordered them online.
“I’m a busy man and I don’t get into that mushy love stuff. Can you do it or not?” More embarrassed than angry, Brian snapped through the other line.
Loraine could sense his annoyance and decided to let it go, she was never one to turn down a good challenge or money that is.
“Ok, ok, I can do it. I just need to ask you a few questions to get it right.”
“Alright.” Breathed Brian out a sigh of relief. This was really going to work!
“Ok.” Quickly Loraine grabbed a pen and a notepad. “Who is this for? How long have you been together? What do you like most about her?….”
A few details later and a settlement of the payment and Loraine was set to write the first love letter she ever wrote.
My beloved darling…
No. Too Victorian proper sappy, she scratched that out.
Dear Ashley,
Not a day goes by that I don’t think of your sweet smell. I dream of your touch every night. I think about you when I comb my hair…
No, wait, stop. Not even a paragraph in and Loraine was stuck. How could she write a love letter that didn’t sound cheesy and actually came from the heart if she didn’t know what love was.
Reading and watching chick flicks just weren’t going to cut for research this time. She needed to actually experience some kind of physical contact to knock this out of the ball park. She was always an over achiever.
To be continued…
